A History of Cire Trudon
In 1643, a salesman named Claude Trudon arrived in Paris. Through marriage he became the owner of a shop on the rue Saint-Honoré. Alongside groceries, the store also provided its customers with wax candles and soon became the supplier of local churches. Over the years the reputation of Maison de Cire Trudon grew and later generations added to the greatness of the company. Cire Trudon became the official provider of the Court of Louis XIV and all subsequent French royals, as well as the greatest cathedrals and churches across France. At the height of its fame Cire Trudon employed over one hundred people working from magnificent premises. Cire Trudon continued to provide the Court of Versailles up until the very last moments of the Ancien Regime. During their captivity, both Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette continued to order candles from the royal wax manufacturer. After the demise of the French monarchy and the onslaught of the more extreme aspects of the Revolution, all former royal associations were hidden under a layer of mortar. Cire Trudon survived this hectic period and once again found favour under the Court of Napoleon. Cire Trudon survived the march of technology, the widespread introduction gas and the birth of electricity. To this day Cire Trudon continues to provide candles for many churches, like Saint-Roch in Paris, which has been burning their candles since 1643. Today Cire Trudon creates from a factory in Normandy, has boutiques in Paris and New York (London, autumn 2011) and sells its products widely across the world through some of the most prestigious retailers. Cire Trudon has a long-standing history of creating vegetal wax candles for the greatest French and international brands - Hermès, Cartier, Dior, Guerlain, Kenzo, etc as well as for palaces and restaurants. In recent years Cire Trudon has brought new ideas including the launch of a collection of scented candles inspired by its illustrious past, scented pillar candles, bust candles, room sprays and even perfumed stink bombs and scented fairy tales... | ![]()
